5 out of 5 stars Visually magnificent, useful, organized   May 25, 2010

These books are a little overwhelming, to be honest. Between the sexy, glossy pages with even more enticing photos, or the million ways to organize information and plan countless trips, it can be difficult to approach without some sort of plan or goal. Fortunately, this book seems to know that and offers, in the very beginning, some best-of items in various categories for the whole country, as well as regional guides (also featuring the neat "best-of" approach) so, rather than overwhelming yourself with the task of seeing the whole country, you can plan a trip to a specific region, and better pick the region based on its offerings.

As with most guide books, you get info on pricing, some cultural notes, contact info, and location info, but Frommer's does this in Great detail, even outlining bus routes and detailed info on what you'll see when biking on specific dirt roads! There is info on attractions geared toward specific interests or types of travelers (stuff for kids, foreign students, gay couples, and people-watchers; church concerts, jazz clubs, wine, wine, and more wine--there's something for everyone!)

The book also has more customizable but still pre-planned trips of different lengths, from the 2-week country-wide tour to weeklong or 3-day regional trips. There are cultural and historical notes, as well as a very concise phrase book and detachable map in the back.

Outstanding guide!

5 out of 5 stars *THE* Italian Travel Guide to Get   March 4, 2010

What struck me about Frommer's Italy Day by Day is how well the book is organized. I love the organization of the book - You can easily navigate through the book and quickly skip to the part(s) that interest you most.

Organization
------------
- Maps of the Places of Interest
The guide starts right off with maps of Northern Italy, Southern Italy, and Tuscany & Umbria. On each map are strategically placed numbers encircled in red to mark the must-see places of interest. The side margins list the places of interest that correspond to each number. The rest of the book make references to the places of interest by referencing these numbers.

- The Best of Italy
An entire chapter (Chapter 1) is devoted to the Best of Italy. The Best of Italy gives you a bird's eye view of the Best of everything in Italy: the Best of Scenic Drives, the Best Museums, the Best Ancient Ruins, the Best Churches & Cathedrals, the Best Piazzas, the Best... well, you get the idea. The Best of Italy contains the must-see places in Italy.

So many places... so little time. Do not be disheartened -- this chapter will help you whittle down the list to select places that interest you most.

- Italy One Chapter at a Time
An entire chapter is devoted to *each* of the major cities in Italy, namely, Rome, Florence, Tuscanyy & Umbria, Bologna & Emilia-Romagna, Venice, Milan, Lombardy & the Lakes, Turin & Piedmont, Liguria, Naples & Campania, and Sicily. Each chapter contains street level to city level maps that are detailed enough to navigate with.

- Itineraries
If you are paralyzed by the sheer number of places to visit and can't decide how to plan out your sightseeing, the guide has a chapter for suggested itineraries. Modify these itineraries to suit your personal preferences.

- Miscellany
The guide also contains Strategies for Seeing Italy (Chapter 2), Italy's History & Culture (Chapter 14), Special Interest Trips (such as hiking, food and wine trips, and miscellaneous outdoor activities) (Chapter 15), and Tips on Savvy Traveling (Chapter 16).

Highlights
----------
- High Quality Color Photographs
Day by Day contains beautiful color photographs of the attractions on almost _every_ page. The photographs in conjunction with the words definitely help to evoke a visceral sense of what it must be like to actually be there! Each chapter is punctuated with a photograph that spans two pages (i.e. the verso and recto) of the book. The photographs alone are worth the cost of the book!

- Tidbit Interludes
Interspersed throughout the pages are little tidbits of information for accompanying the text. These include Shopping Tips, Good Reads, Sightseeing Tips, and Hiking Tips, to name just a few.

---
I'm thoroughly impressed with Frommer's Italy Day by Day -- *it is worth every penny*. Frommer's Italy Day by Day really brings out the flavor of Italy. If you can afford to get only one travel guide for Italy, Frommer's Italy Day by Day is *the* guide to get. I wholeheartedly give it my highest recommendation - 5 stars!

I bid you many happy and safe travels! Buon viaggio!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST have, even for a repeat tourist!   March 6, 2010

I love all of Frommer's guidebooks and this one is no exception. The breakdown of cities is clear with the easy to use maps for each section. For those that believe a picture is worth a thousand words this is your guidebook. From the Duomos & night clubs to little cafes, this book shows you it all in brightly colored pictures.

The information on hotels there is great. They really break down the information for you; are you looking for the Best Boutique hotel or the one with the largest room? And from there they rate the prices by $ or $$ or $$$ you get the picture! Don't be fooled by it size, although it small; this book will help anyone smoothly guide their way through Italy. I wish I had this book during my first visit there. Just the info section on using the trains while in Rome is worth buying this book, because it has an extra map, sealed in the back of the book in a plastic removable "pouch" thingy!!

I could expound for hours on this. This is light years from the one I purchased in 2004 that I used on my last visit to Italy BTW it is glossy, compact & BEE-YOO-TI-FUL !!!

It is surprisingly HEAVY because of the glossy (did I say BEE-YOO-TI-FUL?) paper that they used on this baby. It feels like a small compact BRICK, but worth it's weight in GOLD!! (or EUROS!) Everythiong you will need & then some in this HIGH quality gorgeous guide book! A DEFINITE "Must Have"!

Lets face it, If your spending the cash to take this trip you don't want to miss out on something you WOULD have done or gone to IF you had only known about it when planning your trip. So get it ASAP so you will have the tools to make it a most memorable experience that you can!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, well organized - a great book   March 14, 2010

The "problem" of visiting Italy is that there is so much to see, that it can overwhelm you - how do you choose where to go and what to see? If you know that you only want to go to one city (say Florence) and really don't care about anything else, then the 50 pages on Florence that are in this book probably won't give you any more information than in a book dedicated to Florence. But if you're not sure where you want to go in Italy, then this is the book for you.

This book may seem small, but it is well organized and at over 700 pages (!) there's a lot of information here. It starts with "the best of" and provides a compact page for a series of "bests" (best luxury hotels, most memorable dining experiences, favorite small inns, and so on). If there's something specific you're interested in (like what are the best museums), this is a quick way to narrow down what you should see. From there, it provides 10 strategies for seeing Italy (which seem like more common sense strategies for visiting any country: "pack light", "take advantage of special events") and discusses possible itineraries ("the best of Italy in 2 weeks", "the south in 12 days"). After that, there are chapters that describe cities and general areas in Italy. At the end of the book, there's a chapter that describe Italy's history and culture (enough to provide some general handy information, but not so much to overwhelm you), a chapter of special interest trips (for example, outdoor activities, food and wine trips, and so on) and a chapter called "The Savvy Traveler" which really is a hodgepodge of info - monthly events in Italy, how to get there, tips on traveling, and so on.

The are 10 chapters dealing with cities or general areas (i.e. Tuscany). Each chapter spend several pages on what to see and what they recommend you should see in this city (area) in a limited time period (1 day, 2 days, 3 days). There's also info on architecture, food, hotels, shopping, nightlife and other points of interest.

Maps are placed throughout the book and are easy to read (not too small text). Some maps provide walking tours of sights mentioned in a chapter, some maps just provide general information. There's also a separate map in a plastic pouch at the back of the book that has Rome and Venice on one side and Italy on the other.

My favorite part of this book? The photos. Almost every page has gorgeous photos that make you stop and read. With the good quality paper that was used for this book, it really makes the photos stand out.

All in all, this is a terrific book about Italy. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book for your travels to Italy, both before you go, and while you're there!   March 17, 2010

I love the way that this book is set up, and the way that the information is presented. It's very helpful and customizable to your trip, regardless of whether you'll be staying in each city, region, or locale just one day, or seven.

The presentation of both on AND off the beaten path spots to see is great, and draws attention to some gems that you might not even know that you were missing out on until after you've left. The photography throughout reminded me of all of the things that I loved about Italy, and introduced me to enough new things to want to see to have me really start thinking seriously about planning another trip back. The short blurbs of information on each of the recommended sites/restaurants/hotels, etc. are just enough, and written engagingly enough, to whet your appetite and motivate you to want to check them out for yourself.

The maps throughout the book, marked with the locales mentioned in the enclosing "chapter", are great, and concise enough to help you both in advance planning of your trip, as well as in the midst of walking to the locales themselves while you're actually there. The map in the back is very helpful, and made of a sturdy, coated paper that you won't have to worry about getting Ragu on and being ruined. And the book itself is small and sturdy (albeit a bit heavy - a GOOD thing, though!) to take with you and stick in a pocketbook or small satchel.

Overall, this really is a great book that covers all the bases for your travels to Italy. It'll help you find some really great spots in both well-known tourist haunts in Italy, as well as inform you of places you might not have originally planned to visit. Instead of picking up single city- or region-centric books on parts of Italy, I really don't think you can go wrong with this book - it'll give you PLENTY of ideas on where to spend your time on your trip!
