| Customer Reviews: Umbria (Eyewitness Travel Guide December 28, 2009 John D. Christianson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I carried this book to Umbria this year and found it a good reference for the following reasons: 1. Its small size can be easily tucked into carry-on bag compartments. 2.Concise descriptions with plenty of pictures. 3. The introductory history of Umbria provides a concise time-event reference to set the stage for understanding the development of the area through the years. 4. Good color maps. The cons: 1. Small print is hard to read. 2. The descriptions are a bit brief.
I would rate this book #2 in my carry-on category second to the "Touring Club of Italy" book
Very useful as an adjunct source in planning your trip November 5, 2009 Ursiform (Torrance, CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As is typical with this series, it has a lot of pictures coupled with brief descriptions of places in Umbria, and is useful for choosing places you want to see. While the information in the book is solid and helpful, it does not contain the amount of practical detail you can find in wordier guides. (A picture is sometimes worth a thousand words, but a paragraph about a hotel can be worth far more than the three lines in a table this guide offers.)
I have several guides from this series, and have always found them a useful adjunct to a more comprehensive guide. I'm looking at Umbria as an add-on to a trip to Tuscany, and since I already have guides to Tuscany plus the Michelin Guide to Italy I may not buy another guide to Umbria. While I wouldn't advise planning a trip to Italy based only on this guide, it's worth the investment as a supplement to a more practical and less colorful guide.
